In this edition of the WOCN® Society Member Spotlight, meet Melissa Hiscock, BSN, RN, CWOCN, OCN, CPPS, a dedicated Clinical Trials Nurse Coordinator from Grand Island. With a passion for wound, ostomy, and continence care, Melissa has been a member of the WOCN Society since 2007, proudly upholding her certification and commitment to advancing patient care.
A Journey into WOC Nursing
Melissa’s career in WOC nursing began during her time as a new nurse on a GI/GU medical-surgical unit in 2005. As robotic and minimally invasive surgeries became more common, she frequently encountered complex cases, including dehisced wounds, fistulas, and ostomies. Inspired by the expertise of a CWOCN at the cancer center, she seized the opportunity to join the field when a position opened. Since then, she has never looked back.
A Passion for Patient-Centered Care
Melissa finds immense fulfillment in making a tangible difference in patients’ lives. She is particularly passionate about oncology patients, who often face overwhelming challenges beyond their medical conditions. By providing compassionate and effective WOC care, she strives to ease their burdens and enhance their quality of life.
The Value of WOCN Society Membership
For Melissa, being a member of the WOCN Society is an essential part of her professional identity. She values access to the latest research through the Journal of Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing (JWOCN®) and appreciates the opportunity to collaborate with peers through Society forums.
Moments of Impact
While Melissa takes pride in every moment she can improve a patient’s life, one experience particularly stands out. She once worked with a hospice patient suffering from an extensive breast tumor. When she asked the patient about her biggest goal, the patient simply wished to attend church. Melissa designed a dressing that managed odor and drainage while being discreet under clothing. The patient was able to attend church one final time before passing away. This experience reinforced an essential lesson for Melissa: Always align care with the patient’s personal goals.
Another memorable moment came when a former patient recognized her at a county fair years after their treatment. Introducing her as “the woman who changed his life,” he reminded Melissa of the deep and lasting impact WOC nurses have on their patients.
Looking Ahead
Melissa is nearing the completion of her PhD and is excited to advance research on pressure injury prevention and wound care for oncology patients. Her dedication to improving patient outcomes through both hands-on care and scientific advancement reflects her unwavering commitment to the field.
Beyond Nursing
Melissa cherishes time with her family and dogs when she’s not working or studying. Once her PhD journey is complete, Melissa looks forward to rediscovering her love for reading and painting.
